Size
This design combines elements of a classic French cape with the functional features of an outdoor sports run jacket. The relaxed A-line silhouette is complemented by a fly-front fastening and wide side vents on the hem. The subtle textures and colours of natural dyestuffs combined with the taut, high-quality 100% organic cotton canvas fabric, g this contemporary oversized, hooded coat an air of sophistication and ethical integrity. The coat’s liner is made from a comfortable and premium typewriter (plain wave) fabric. In the case of the Anthracite (charcoal) model, constructed from recycled nylon and plant-based materials, it offers exceptional waterproof and breathable properties, making it well-equipped to withstand adverse weather conditions such as rain and snow.

Available in 2 materials / 3 colours.

TEXTILE

The finest quality canvas fabric, which brings a pleasant texture unique to cotton, is an ESC original textile created through the excellent craftsmanship of a canvas maker in Shiga Prefecture. This maker has inherited and preserved the traditional Takashima sailcloth quality for generations. Only natural-origin materials, including pigments are used throughout the entire process. It is woven with unbleached yarns to enhance the comfortably rich texture and colour of the high-quality cotton.

INNER TEXTILE

A custom-made typewriter (plain weave) fabric is used to provide premium comfort, woven by an acclaimed textiles manufacturer established in 1928 within Shizuoka prefecture's renowned Enshu cotton textiles district. The high-density, smooth textile, created from 100% organic cotton yarn, is intricately woven on a traditional shuttle loom, which requires advanced craftsmanship. It also offers a comfortable range of motion for the arms, in addition to moisture absorption and temperature retention properties. The cotton yarn remains unbleached to preserve the natural texture and colour of the cotton.

NATURAL DYEING

Our focus was on harnessing the rich colours of traditional Japanese mineral dyeing, an ancient technique believed to enhance the suppleness of the thread, as well as offering insect-repellent and deodorising properties.
The unique iron powder dyeing procedure was meticulously carried out by skilled dyeing artisans at a renowned studio in Tokyo, using upcycled iron powder sourced from shipbuilders in the Hiroshima-prefecture. This mineral dye evokes the authentic colour and texture of iron itself. The natural changes in both the colour and texture are to be enjoyed, much like with indigo-dyed denim garments.

[ Due to the nature of the dye, changes in texture and gradual colour fading are to be expected as a result of friction over time.]

PARTS

The magnetic button, cord stopper, and ventilation eyelets are made from brass and aluminum for durability and recyclability, and are manufactured and finished at a factory in Japan. The Anthracite nylon model's sturdy nylon drawcord, selected for its functionality, is made by ATWOODROPE in the USA.

METAL EMBLEM

The ESC logo features the brand's iconic elephant by fusing the design elements of a traditional Japanese family crest with contemporary graphic features. The brass badges are forged with expert craftsmanship in a workshop located in downtown Tokyo, a historic production area renowned for creating the finest insignia emblems.

ATTENTION [Mineral pigment dye]

This iron powder dyeing is done by hand by dyeing artisans, so there is some unevenness in the colour. Due to the nature of the dye, changes in texture and colour fading due to friction will occur over time. The natural changes in colour and texture are to be enjoyed, similar to indigo-dyed denim garments.
To keep the original colour and texture as long as possible and prevent the pigment from peeling off, please dry-clean the fabric inside out with a weak petroleum-based dry-cleaner and avoid tumbler-drying (hang-drying is recommended). Wear and store in dry conditions as prolonged exposure to moisture and high temperatures may cause discolouration, colour migration and odours.
